Commas (,) are small marks that help readers understand sentences better. They tell us when to pause and help separate ideas. Let’s learn some of the most common ways to use commas!
1. In a list
Use commas to separate three or more items in a list.
-
- Example: I packed my shoes, jacket, toothbrush, and snacks.
2. With an introductory word or phrase
Add a comma after words like yes, no, well, or after school when they come at the beginning.
-
- Example: Yes, I finished my homework.
- Example: After dinner, we played board games.
3. To set off extra information (appositives)
If you’re adding extra details about someone or something, put commas around that part.
-
- Example: My teacher, Mrs. Cruz, gave us a fun project.
- Example: Our dog, Max, loves to chase butterflies.
4. In dates and places
Use a comma between the day and year, and between a city and a state.
-
- Example: I was born on March 12, 2013.
- Example: We went to Orlando, Florida for vacation.
5. In compound sentences
Put a comma before words like and, but, or so when joining two complete thoughts.
-
- Example: I wanted to go swimming, but it started to rain.
6. When talking to someone (direct address):
Use a comma to separate the name of the person you’re talking to.
-
- Example: Mom, can you help me?
- Example: Let’s go, Alex.
7. In tag questions:
Add a comma before a tag question at the end of a sentence.
-
- Example: You finished your work, didn’t you?
Commas make writing easier to read. They may be small, but they do a big job!
